Vasily inherited his Italian surname and passion for music from his great-grandfather, who moved from Naples to the Russian Empire.
The future opera singer began singing lessons as a young child. After leaving school he entered the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. During his 4th year there, the talented student was invited to sing at the Mariinsky Theatre, where he made his debut as Valentine in Faust. Leading roles followed — Onegin, Rodrigo, Figaro, Macbeth. With the Mariinsky Theatre company, Vasily Gerello toured the world, conquering such prestigious opera stages as Covent Garden, La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera and the Deutsche Opera.
Currently, he performs regularly with world-renowned conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Riccardo Muti, Myung-Whun Chung, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink and Fabio Luisi.
For the Hermitage Days in Serbia, Vasily Gerello has prepared a special concert at the National Theatre in Belgrade, with the participation of soprano Nazia Amineva, accompanied by the theatre orchestra conducted by the famous Russian conductor Mikhail Golikov. They will perform classical opera hits (Verdi, Mozart, Puccini), Russian and Neapolitan songs and musical pieces in Serbian.
