The 4th Russia-Serbia Archaeological Conference "From the Urals to the Balkans: Contacts and Conflicts in the Roman Period and the Middle Ages" is to be held during the Hermitage Days in Serbia on 23−31 October 2023. The conference will include presentations by more than 50 archaeology experts from Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Pskov, Samara, Ryazan, Tula, Tyumen, Simferopol) and Serbia (Novi Sad, Belgrade, Pancevo, Pozarevac, Cacak).
The conference is organized by the Museum of Vojvodina, the State Hermitage Museum, the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the National Museum of Serbia. The event’s title partner is Gazprom Neft.
The formal opening ceremony in Novi Sad is scheduled for 23 October 2023. The closing ceremony will take place at the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade on 27 October 2023. Russian Ambassador in Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko will attend it. After this, the Serbian participants will visit St. Petersburg for several days to engage in research sessions and meetings with their Russian counterparts at the Hermitage Museum.
The 4th Russia-Serbia Archaeological Conference is arranged under the auspices of cooperation agreements between the Museum of Vojvodina, the Hermitage, and the Institute for the History of Material Culture and the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. These agreements call for reciprocal visits and meetings of experts from various fields of archeology, as well as field trips. The research efforts primarily focus on studying the origins of the Slavs in the Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, as well as on finding archaeological traces of ethnic groups that shared at least two millennia of common history with the Slavs.
