The Empresses

Film

Peter the Great, the first Russian emperor, promised his little daughter Elizabeth to marry her off to Louis XV and so she could become the Queen of France. However, all these plans, including his arrangements with the French king, fell flat after the monarch’s death. Peter passes away without leaving an heir to the throne. This event triggers a ferocious and merciless period of palace coups — a time of mischief and power games. Will the empire built by Peter and its new capital, St. Petersburg, survive? What price will Peter’s youngest daughter Elizabeth have to pay to carve out a place in history? And how can Russia benefit from having a woman on its throne?

The film tells us about the first empresses of the Russian Empire: Catherine I (Ksenia Utekhina), Anna Ioannovna (Anna Ukolova), and the film's main character Queen Elizabeth of Russia (Yulia Peresild).

Filmed in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the movie shows numerous palaces and mansions to recreate the spirit of the time in every detail. Moreover, dozens of costumes were specially designed for the film to reproduce the original outfits of the empresses as much as possible.

The movie was directed by Andrey Kravchuk (Admiral, Viking, Union of Salvation, Peter the Great – the Last Tsar and the First Emperor).

The film was created by Gazprom-Media Holding at the request and with support from Gazprom PJSC as part of The Rus historical projects series, which describes the events and personalities that contributed to building the great Russian Empire. The movie is a sequel to the film titled Peter the Great – the Last Tsar and the First Emperor, which became the top-grossing documentary drama in the history of Russia's film industry.
During the Hermitage Days, the film will be demonstrated for the first time to the Serbian audience.

On October 29, after the premiere, there will be a discussion of the film with director Andrei Kravchuk.
